VoIP

What is VoIP?

Voice over internet protocol is the method for taking analog audio signal turning them into digital data that can be transmitted over the Internet. VoIP can turn a standard Internet connection into a way to place free phone calls.
Three different VoIP in common use:
1. ATA(analog telephone adaptor)
-most straightforward and is frequently used.
-connect a standard phone to your computer or your Internet connection for use with VoIP.
- An analog-to-digital converter.
Analog signal ( from traditional phone)à digital data (for transmission over the Internet.)
2. IP Phones
-- specialized phones (with a handset, cradle and buttons)
-- have an RJ-45 Ethernet connector. IP phones connect directly
3. Computer-to-computer
Needs:
a) software,
b) microphone
c) speakers
d) sound card
e) an Internet connection
all of the current circuit-switched networks will be replaced with packet-switching technology
Features of VoIP that is in VoIP
· Caller ID
· Call waiting
· Call transfer
· Repeat dial
· Return call
· Three-way calling
